Studying the Gofar transform fault quasi-periodic earthquake cycle using marine EM
The GOFAR project focus on studying the evolution of stress, deformation, and pore fluid behavior along the Gofar mid-ocean ridge transform fault system in the East Pacific Rise. During a six weeks cruise in early 2022 (4CASTGofar), we collected seafloor MT/CSEM and towed receiver CSEM data along five towlines across the Gofar system. Two-dimensional CSEM inversion models will image the subsurface electrical resistivity from which we can derive the porosity of the crust. By mapping porosity variations throughout the Gofar damage zone of primary seismicity and a barrier zone that inhibits rupture propagation, we will investigate the role of fluids in Gofar’s quasi-periodic seismic cycle.
The cruise has been completed on March 2022. Project collobortaros are currently processing and modeling the MT, CSEM, and seismic datasets.
